The Hobbit is the tale of a quest. The heroic journey or quest has been a popular device in stories throughout the ages. A quest is a difficult journey where the hero/heroine faces many dangers and obstacles in order to achieve something or perhaps to find a significant object or person. The hero/heroine is often changed by the journey.
